This Index of names of all the personages who occur in the texts of the Carttjlakium Saxonicum was originally undertaken for my the author's own use, and was confined to the names of the witnesses. In this form it was the work of the author's colleagues, Mr. I. H. Jeayes and Mr. F. B. Bickley. Subsequently the author was desired to incorporate the names of the persons which are found in the body of the texts, so as to make it a complete Index of Names, and in this form it is now issued to the subscribers.
For obvious reasons no attempt has been made to amalgamate variously spelled names of the same person. Strict order of alphabet is the only possible way of arranging such an assemblage of ancient names. Their grouping and identification may well be left—a pleasing task—to the student of Anglo-Saxon Diplomatics. It is hoped that the Index will add greatly to the utility of the large number of thirteen hundred and fifty charters and documents which the author have had the opportunity of bringing together to illustrate English history down to the death of King Eadgar in a.d. 975 ; the largest collection ever published, many of them hitherto unknown. This Index thus forms the most extensive nomenclator of actual reference yet produced for this remote period, and is valuable, not only as a list of the notables both of Church and State, but as a contribution towards the elucidation of Anglo-Saxon and Early English family names and surnames.
